Random Number Generators

Posted on Friday, 1 June 2012

If you have ever wondered just how online casinos “select” which cards are drawn, which number the roulette ball is going to settle on, or what symbol will appear on the slot machine, then wonder no more!  Like most of the things in our days, it is all down to computer processors!

The Random Number Generator (RNG) is at the core of every game and simply put, it is a system that generates a totally random series of numbers.

The RNG uses a formula known as an algorithm which is a series of instructions for generating the random numbers. The scope of this is beyond what our mathematical minds could muster but can always be checked for accuracy. The number that is generated does not in any way control or influence the number or numbers that follow. For example, the fact that the last number generated was the number 6 does not prohibit the next number from being 6 again nor does it in any way predict what number will follow suit, or what number is more likely to follow further down the line.

To safeguard our players, there are independent organisations such as eCOGRA which make sure that the RNG performs as it should be and that the players are never cheated. To ensure the generator doesn’t output numbers in any kind of pattern, it is rigorously tested every month by conducting millions of rounds of play and then examining the results intricately.
